Open Space

My entry for the OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 04, made over a weekend.

The theme is Freedom, so I themed my songs around a space exploration game, because flying through space is pretty freeing.

GAME DESCRIPTION

In the game you would build a rocket and fly around space, fighting other ships and visiting planets to buy new ship parts and collect things. The Earth has become a pretty terrible, post-apocalyptic place to live so everyone is trying to get into space to escape. The game would have a sort of cyberpunk style with old tech cobbled together, see my little drawing on the cover art.

TRACK LIST

1. Build Your Rocket - Will play when you are building your rocket using parts you've collected throughout the game. I listened to a few old garage compilations on YouTube before I made this because I wanted to have the player building rockets in a garage (funny!!). You might be able to hear the classic garage organ sound I used for the bass line.

2. Blast-Off!! - Really happy with this one, it's short and sweet and plays each time you launch your newly built rocket into space. Orchestral Tools recently released some free orchestral instruments, including a solo cello with LEGATO! I've been wanting a free one of these for ages and I've been using it a lot ever since I downloaded it. I think the little cello melody I did here is nice, it's ascending because you're going up in a rocket. The choir in the background is also from Orchestral Tools. A lot of this is basically copied from the next track, Open Space, because I wanted this song to kind of lead into the one that plays when you are actually in space. The weird distorted sound at the start is actually just a piano sound with a load of different effects on it.

3. Open Space - This one plays while you're flying around in space, like an overworld theme. I'm really happy with the middle section with the cello and the cool bass synth. In my head I was picturing constellations and planets when I wrote the cello melody, lots of pretty formations of notes that don't really repeat to reflect the stars in the sky. I'm not completely satisfied with the second part, it's basically just a more upbeat version of the first part with different instruments and I don't think it sounds as good. I don't have time to make it better though so it'll have to do.
